DRY EYE AND TEAR PRODUCTION

FROM ELEANOR IN TX

You can be teary-eyed and STILL have "dry eye".

Reflex tears: Great for crying, reacting to
spicy foods, or washing foreign bodies out of the
eye. These tears are the least of my worries. I
lost the other three layers. For those of you
who saw mucous strands after laser or T's, you
can see from the following descriptions what
layer you lost. In a normal eye, those layers
come back in two weeks. Following a chemical
reaction, only God knows when they will come
back. If enough tear-producing cells were
killed, they may never come back. If they do not,
I can never have surgery to correct the scar over
the right pupil. I will have to fight against
scarring and blindness for the rest of my life.

You can be dry eyed and still have tears running
down your cheeks because you lack vital layers of
the other kinds of tears.

These layers are crucial for the life of the
cornea or to promote healing of a T:
Tear Layer Description verbatim from the
Internet.

"Mucous layer: The first is the mucous layer,
which provides an anchor for the other layers.
The mucous layer is produced by goblet cells
located in the white of the eye and in the inner
surfaces of the eyelids."

"Watery layer The second is the watery layer,
which sits on top of the mucous layer. The watery
layer is produced by the lacrimal gland betweeen
the eye and the eyebrow. Lacrimal gland tear
production slows down during sleep, which is why
dry eyes can feel worse when you first wake up."

"Meibomian (oily)
layer: The third is the meibomian or oily layer,
which is the top layer and which serves to
prevent evaporation of the watery layer. The
meibomian layer exudes oil from the 23 oil glands
that line the inner edge of the eyelid."
