When the first transplants were being done the thread used was a thick, heavy thread.  Today the thread being used is finer and lighter than a human hair, and actually will float if dropped, and not fall to the ground. 
This isn't talking about the history of the full transplant, but under the "operation" heading you'll find what it says about the thread used.  There is an additional piece of new information on the cornea in the sentence just above the "operation" heading:

The most recent change in full cornea transplants is the way the graft is cut and the positioning of it.  This is called the "top hat" way of doing a full transplant:
