Is Fuchs' in ALL the layers of the cornea?
This medical report states that there is no proof of whether the endothelium is the primary or the secondary regarding fuchs' dystrophy: http://www.iovs.org/cgi/content/full/41/9/2501 When fuchs' dystrophy was originally discovered by Dr Ernst Fuchs the name given to it was "Combined Dystrophy of Fuchs". To this day you will find Fuchs' Dystrophy listed under "Combined Dystrophy of Fuchs". The reason given by Dr Fuchs for giving it that name was because it was affecting all the layers of the cornea. On the page: http://www.ijo.in/article.asp?issn=0301-4738;year=1971;volume=19;issue=2;spage=71;epage=76;aulast=Malik it says: "Fuchs in 1910 described a bilateral epithelial dystrophy, mainly in women, unassociated with inflammation and characterised by loss of sensations, superficial corneal cloudiness, epithelial oedema mainly affecting the central cornea. He later speculated that the endothelium might be involved in the production of lesion. Now it is a well known fact that the stromal and epithelial changes were preceded by disturbance of corneal endothelium. Hence Fuch's dystrophy came to be known as combined dystrophy of Fuch's"
