EYEDROPS: TYPE AND USEAGE

(note: website links on bottom of page)

Muro Drops and Ointment
For fuchs' eyes (NOT cornea transplant eyes) when
we refer to drops and ointments we are usually
referring to what is called Muro in America. Muro
is a special salt solution that is used to attempt
to dry some of the excess moisture out of the
water-logged fuchs' eye. For many users Muro
drops burn in the eye quite a bit, and we nicknamed
it "battery acid". In many cases the worse your
fuchs' is the worse it burns to use. Also, the
more advanced your fuchs' is the less likely it
will be that it will help your vision much. Muro
ointment doesn't burn as badly as the drops do, but
the same is true regarding advanced fuchs'. When
your fuchs' is advanced, and you also have blisters,
the Muro ointment helps soothe the pain.
Ways To Put Eyedrops In
IMPORTANT NOTE: AFTER INSTILLING THE EYEDROPS
CLOSE YOUR EYE AND KEEP IT CLOSED FOR ONE TO TWO
MINUTES. BLINKING AND TEARING CAN DILUTE THE STRENGTH OF
THE DROP DRAMATICALLY. KEEPING THE EYE CLOSED
REDUCES THAT DILUTION.
Karen P: I'm right-handed, so I'd think if you're
left-handed you could do the same thing only reversed.
I hold the eyedrops in my right hand and rest my
thumb-side of my index finger just above the
eyebrow of the eye I want drops in. Then I can use
the other hand to pull the lower lid down to make a
sort-of "pocket" for the drops. By having the right
hand resting on the eyebrow area like that I can
slide it over to just the right spot and squeeze
the drop in! Then, I hold the pocket open for a few
seconds after putting the drop in, put both hands
down, and close my eyes for a second while grabbing
the hanky to dab at the excess drop coming out!

Judy/NM uses the corner of the eye method. You rest
your index finger on your eyebrow and drop the eyedrop
into the corner of your eye closest to your nose.
Then blink, blink, blink the drop into the eye from
the corner.

Patti M/TX: "I put the drops in from the outer side of my eye,
the side by the ear.  That way I can watch them go in.
I finally showed my husband how to do this and
now he does not have to come a hunten me down."

TASTING THE DROPS: For those of you who taste those
eyedrops after you put them in, you might want to
press the corners of your eyes by the nose when you
put the drops in. This will temporarily close off the
tear ducts that would send the drops down the nose
and throat and let all the drop go in the eye (and
the excess flow OUT of the eye, LOL!) and not down
your nose/throat!
Preservative Free Drops Many people have problems with the preservatives in
eyedrops. Even eyedrops that have "disappearing
preservatives" in them (see list in
"Disappearing Preservatives") often bother people,
because they still DO have preservatives.
Preservative-Free eyedrops are ones in single-use tubes.
The good news is that you DON'T HAVE TO use them
and discard. Some of them have tops that can "click"
back on and reuse. Others, that you can't replace the
tops on, you can store either open-end-up in a
shotglass in the refridg., or else open-end-up in a tightly
closed clean empty prescription bottle. The best rule for
ALL eyedrops (preservative or not, reuse or not) is
DON'T PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR EYES WITHOUT
PERMISSION FROM YOUR TRUSTED EYE
PROFESSIONAL!

Disappearing Preservatives GenTeal drops and gel; TheraTears; Refresh LiquiGel;
all have "disappearing preservatives". These may
be all right for some eyes, but the more compromised
the cornea the more difficult it may be to "dissolve"
the preservative. To many patients, these are the same
as drops that have regular preservatives in them.
ASK YOUR EYE DR BEFORE USING THESE, OR ANY
EYE DROPS!
