Astigmatism after a traditonal full Transplant (PK)

submitted by Rita G/IA:

this material was found at http://bjo.bmjjournals.com/cgi/reprint/81/8/631

Here are some results from the British corneal transplant follow up study that were published in the British journal of ophthalmology where I could get an article for free (Conclusions of the corneal transplant follow up study, Br. J. Ophthalmol. 1997;81;631-636, A Vail, S M Gore, B A Bradley, D L Easty, C A Rogers and W J Armitage).  The article that I would have to pay for is much longer and probably contains more details of how they did any statistical analysis.  I am listing the results of corrected visual acuity and astigmatism.  Since these are just counts, they can't be changed by any method of statistical analysis.

Results of corrected visual acuity (numbers were 3129 pre-operative, 2210 at 3 months post-op, and 1849 at 12 month post-op).  Please note the 3/200 looks strange to us in the US, but it's a conversion of the British measurements used in the study.

Pre-op corrected visual acuity

>20/40          5%

  20/40          12%

  20/80          22%

  20/200        36%

<3/200          25%

3 months post-op corrected visual acuity

>20/40          29%

  20/40          29%

  20/80          24%

  20/200        15%

<3/200            3%

12 months post-op corrected visual acuity

>20/40          47%

  20/40          28%

  20/80          15%

  20/200          8%

<3/200            2%

Astigmatism  (numbers were 503 pre-operative, 1116 at 3 months post-op, and 1232 at 12 month post-op)

 Pre-op astigmatism

>8 diopters     4%

  8 diopters     5%

  6 diopters   13%

  4 diopters   28%

<2 diopters   50%

3 months post-op astigmatism

>8 diopters   13%

  8 diopters   15%

  6 diopters   20%

  4 diopters   30%

<2 diopters   22%

12 months post-op astigmatism

>8 diopters   10%

  8 diopters   12%

  6 diopters   20%

  4 diopters   35%

<2 diopters   23%

Information from Ken S/TX indicated that his 6 diopters post-traditional-T were correctable to 20/20 vision with glasses.  In addition, Judith W/Ontario's husband (who is an optometrist) indicated that up to 8 diopters can be corrected with glasses, although there may be some "blur" involved, which the patient adjust to quite easily.

This means that 3 months after a traditional T 87% of traditional T patients can have their astigmatim adjusted with glasses, and one years after 90% of them can.  That leaves only about 10% of traditional T patients needing RGP lenses to adjust their post-T astigmatism, or 1 out of 10.
